Arras 100

Arras 100

Arras, partner town to Ipswich sat in the centre of a huge British offensive launched 100 years ago in April 1917.

The Arras Offensive involved thousands of British Empire and Commonwealth soldiers, supported by hundreds of Aircraft, Artillery Pieces and Tanks. The British High Command brought in new artillery methods, new Infantry tactics and at significant cost, wrestled control of the skies from the German Air Service.

The Air battle itself was so intense and fierce that it earned the nickname 'Bloody April' among the pilots of the Royal Flying Corps. Below the air battle, on a front stretching from Vimy in the North down to Bullecourt in the South, the BEF was attacking with determination and achieving some initial success. As the offensive ground on through April into May momentum was lost and German resistance intensified, the BEF was once more locked in a closely fought struggle in the mud of Artois. Hard fought battles took place around Gavrelle, Cherisy and Oppy, names that have long been overshadowed by the battles fought around Ypres and on the Somme. Our fully guided Arras 100 tour takes you to Arras and the battlefields over which the offensive that bore its name was fought, the tour will be lead by Galloway's Resident Military Historian Mike Peters.
