Northumberland is a magical place filled with ancient castles, hidden gardens, unspoilt golden sandy beaches, rolling hills, rugged moorland, sweeping views, friendly little market towns and villages and a cultural heritage all its own. Combine excursions to South Shields, Durham, Amble, Warkworth and Alnwick with a full day spent at leisure in Newcastle.

Day 1

Following collection from home, travel to Newcastle and to arrive at the Millennium Copthorne Hotel by late afternoon for the five night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast to be greeted with tea, coffee and biscuits.


Day 2

After breakfast, head for the coast and South Shields, home of the late Catherine Cookson, before travelling to the ancient and historic City of Durham, acclaimed as a World Heritage Site and dominated by the magnificent Norman cathedral and castle, high above the River Wear.

Day 3

Enjoy a free morning at leisure in Newcastle. Just a short walk along the quayside from the hotel is the Millennium 'Winking Eye' bridge and Newcastle's famous quayside. Later we join the boat at the quayside for a fabulous cruise on the River Tyne, with expert commentary. The cruise takes you under many of the Tyne bridges.

Day 4

Today, take the road north to Amble, Warkworth and historic Alnwick. We visit the magnificent castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland family dating back to 1309. The castle has featured in several Harry Potter films and also Downton Abbey. There is much to see, including the sumptuous State rooms. The beautifully landscaped Alnwick Garden has many unique features, sculptures, the infamous Poisin Garden and one of the largest tree houses in the world.

Day 5

Today's excursion takes us to the north of Northumberland across the causeway to Holy Island and the mysterious Lindisfarne Castle. We return to Bamburgh, with its mighty castle on the beach and the Grace Darling museum. (Please note the crossing to Holy Island is governed by tide times and it may be necessary to amend this excursion).

Day 6

This morning it's time to say goodbye to the Copthorne Hotel and travel home to East Anglia where the door to door collection service will be waiting to return you home.
